English
Welcome to English
English sits at the heart of the curriculum, helping students to become confident readers, skilled writers and effective communicators. Through the study of both literature and language, students develop the ability to think critically, express themselves clearly and engage with a wide range of ideas, perspectives and experiences.
At Sybil Andrews Academy, our English curriculum exposes students to a rich and diverse range of texts, including novels, plays, poetry and non-fiction from different time periods and cultures. Students explore how writers use language and structure to create meaning, while developing the analytical skills needed to interpret and evaluate texts with confidence.
Alongside reading, students are taught to write for a variety of purposes and audiences, developing their creativity, accuracy and control. Opportunities for discussion, debate and oracy are embedded throughout the curriculum, enabling students to articulate their ideas clearly and respectfully.
At Key Stage 4, students study both GCSE English Language and English Literature, building upon the knowledge and skills developed throughout Key Stage 3. The curriculum prepares students not only for examination success but also for further education, employment and life beyond school.
We are committed to fostering a love of reading and helping students appreciate the power of language to inform, inspire and challenge. Through English, students develop valuable lifelong skills in communication, analysis, creativity and critical thinking.
To encourage a love of reading beyond the classroom, we have carefully curated a reading list that offers students a diverse range of enjoyable, challenging and thought-provoking texts.
Further information about what students study in each year group can be found in our English Long-Term Plan.
