Homework
Homework at Sybil Andrews Academy
At Sybil Andrews Academy, we believe that learning extends beyond the classroom. Homework is a purposeful and important part of our curriculum, helping pupils to strengthen their knowledge, develop independence and build the habits needed for success in school and beyond. Homework reflects our values of Kindness, Responsibility and Courage, supporting all pupils to become confident, resilient learners.
All homework is recorded on Arbor and is carefully designed to reinforce and extend learning. We encourage parents and carers to use Arbor regularly to support their child in organising and completing homework.
Homework may:
- Reinforce and consolidate learning from lessons through retrieval and deliberate practice
- Prepare pupils for future learning through research, reading or pre-learning activities
- Develop subject-specific vocabulary, knowledge and understanding
- Provide opportunities to apply learning in new contexts, including extended projects and exam-style tasks
- Encourage pupils to become organised, independent and responsible learners
- Help teachers identify strengths, address misconceptions and plan future learning effectively
Homework plays an important role in supporting pupil progress. We ask parents and carers to encourage good homework habits, provide support where needed, and contact the school if there are any barriers preventing completion. A range of support, including access to the Library and teacher guidance, is available to ensure all pupils can successfully complete their homework.
By working together, we can help every pupil develop the knowledge, confidence and study skills needed to achieve their full potential.
Support with Homework
At Sybil Andrews Academy, we recognise that pupils may sometimes need additional support to complete their homework. In the first instance the pupil should talk to the subject teacher. If a homework task is not completed, this will be recorded on Arbor and staff will work with the student to identify any barriers to learning.
Where homework is repeatedly missed, teachers will contact home to discuss concerns and offer support. Pupils may then be required to attend Homework Support sessions, where they can access resources, guidance and a quiet space to complete outstanding work.
Our aim is always to help pupils develop positive learning habits and complete their work successfully. However, if a pupil does not attend a compulsory Homework Support session, this will be viewed as not meeting reasonable school expectations and a detention may be issued.
We value our partnership with parents and carers and encourage families to contact us if there are any circumstances that may affect a student’s ability to complete homework so that appropriate support can be put in place.
