Art & Design
Welcome to Art
Art is a creative and exciting subject that encourages students to explore, experiment and express their ideas visually. Through drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media and other artistic processes, students develop their creativity, technical skills and confidence as artists.
A key feature of our curriculum is the study of artists and their work. Students learn about a range of artists, craftspeople and designers from different periods, cultures and artistic movements, exploring the techniques, styles and influences that shaped their work. By analysing and discussing artwork, students develop their understanding of artistic processes and learn how artists communicate ideas and emotions.
Students are then given opportunities to practise and replicate aspects of an artist’s work, helping them to develop new techniques and build confidence in using different media. As their understanding grows, students use these skills and influences to create their own original outcomes, inspired by the artists they have studied while showcasing their own creativity and personal responses.
Throughout the curriculum, students are encouraged to take risks, refine their work through experimentation and reflect on their creative decisions. In doing so, they develop resilience, independence and critical thinking skills alongside their artistic abilities.
Art provides students with an opportunity to express themselves, explore new perspectives and engage with the world in creative ways. Whether pursuing Art further or simply developing a lifelong appreciation for creativity, students gain valuable skills that support success across many areas of learning and future careers.
