Welcome to Sociology

We are delighted to introduce Sociology as a new GCSE option subject at our school from September 2026.

Sociology is the study of society, people and social issues. Students will explore how individuals and groups interact, how society is organised, and how institutions such as the family, education system and media influence our lives. The course encourages students to question assumptions, evaluate evidence and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

We follow the Eduqas GCSE Sociology specification, which provides students with opportunities to investigate contemporary social issues and debates. Topics studied include Families, Education, Crime and Deviance, and Social Stratification, enabling students to examine how factors such as social class, gender and ethnicity can shape people’s experiences.

Throughout the course, students will develop valuable skills in analysis, interpretation, discussion and essay writing. They will learn how sociologists research society, evaluate different viewpoints and construct well-supported arguments using evidence.

Sociology is an engaging and thought-provoking subject that complements a wide range of GCSE courses and provides an excellent foundation for further study in the social sciences. Students who enjoy discussing current issues, understanding different perspectives and exploring why society works the way it does will find Sociology both challenging and rewarding.
