Citizenship
Welcome to Citizenship
Citizenship is an engaging and relevant subject that helps students understand the world around them and their role within it. Through the study of Citizenship, students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to become active, informed and responsible citizens in modern Britain.
At Key Stage 4, students explore a range of important topics, including democracy and government, the legal system, rights and responsibilities, the economy, and the role of citizens in bringing about change within society. The subject encourages students to think critically about contemporary issues, consider different viewpoints and develop informed arguments supported by evidence.
A key strength of Citizenship at Sybil Andrews Academy is the opportunity for students to engage with the wider community and hear directly from those involved in public life. We are pleased to welcome a range of guest speakers into school to enrich students’ learning. Most recently, students had the opportunity to meet and question local MP Peter Prinsley, gaining first-hand insight into democracy, representation and political decision-making.
Students are encouraged to discuss current affairs, participate in debate and consider how they can contribute positively to their communities. These experiences help bring learning to life and demonstrate the importance of active citizenship beyond the classroom.
Further information about the curriculum can be found in our Citizenship Long-Term Plan.
Citizenship equips students with important life skills, helping them to understand their rights and responsibilities, engage with society confidently and prepare for life in a diverse and ever-changing world.
