Welcome to French

Learning a modern foreign language opens the door to new cultures, experiences and opportunities, while developing valuable communication and problem-solving skills. Through the study of French, students gain an appreciation of different ways of life and develop the confidence to communicate in another language.

Our curriculum is designed to help students build their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, enabling them to use French confidently in a range of real-life contexts. Students learn how to express their opinions, describe experiences, discuss future plans and communicate about topics that are relevant to their lives.

Alongside language learning, students develop their understanding of the cultures, traditions and communities of French-speaking countries around the world. This helps students become more culturally aware and fosters curiosity about the wider world.

Lessons are designed to build students’ vocabulary and grammatical knowledge progressively over time, allowing them to communicate with increasing accuracy and fluency. Students are encouraged to take risks, develop their confidence and celebrate the progress they make as language learners.

Studying French supports the development of memory, resilience, communication and analytical skills, all of which are highly valued by employers and universities. The subject also provides an excellent foundation for further study and future careers in an increasingly global society.
